Jeremiah and Megan Bowen, founders of SpiritHorse Rehabilitation Center, have been riding and training horses since their childhood. In 2013 after having moved to Texas as part of the US military, they began offering riding lessons at Canaan Land Ranch to students of a local private school. This group of 7 kids and 3 horses opened the doors for a full riding facility. By the following year, having obtained their Equine Assisted Health Care certificates through SpiritHorse International, Jeremiah and Megan began working with the at risk youth at a local foster care group home.
The following fall, after aquiring several new horses through donations and local rescues, many new students joined SpiritHorse and the Bexar County 4-H community. This introduced their students to the world of English jumping and Speed Play Days. Their top priority however remained and still remains providing therapy to those with disabilities, PTSD, and at risk youth.
Established in 2014 SpiritHorse Rehabilitation Center has been reaching out and helping these individuals to seek peace, hope, and restoration. It is through the interaction with the horses that we help them reach their full potential. The typical students provide the funds to maintain the horses and through their volunteerism ensure that SpiritHorse can offer therapy service on donation base only.
All students both typical and those with special needs work one on one with their instructor and progress through a series of 70 steps which focus on improving balance, coordination and rhythm. During these lessons students learn how to care for, ride and connect with their horse partner.
SpiritHorse Rehabilitation Center is always looking for new ways that they can provide help and reach out to families in San Antonio. Some of these activities that are in the works include a community garden, swimming, and dog training. We are always in need of volunteers that can help us as instructors, ranch maintenance, and administration.
